“Sonetto,” Italian for “the sonnet,” represents the oldest form of Italian poetry, a melodically recited poem. And so, with the new collection, Rosenthal creates a true poem in porcelain. Instead of stanzas and verses, the new line orchestrates organic and floral shapes as well as a variety of materials. Culinary highlights can be artfully staged on different levels. In the plates, Sonetto plays with heights and depths as well as a trompe-l’oeil look. A raised center in the shape of a blossom, for example, presents the finest dishes on a kind of pedestal. Floral shapes also appear in the various bowls, cups and shaping, or in small details such as the handles of the cups. In terms of colour, the collection is oriented toward fine white glazes, partly glossy, partly matte. Gold rims add elegant accents. By contrast, bowls on feet, bowls, pitchers, and small vessels with or without lids, made of stoneware with a rough handmade character and robust shapes, skillfully create contrasts with the fine porcelain pieces.
